Explain to me the point of NATO when the President of its most powerful member threatens to invade the territory of another member, and the NATO Secretary General hears it all and treats it as a joke.

Some grown up Republicans should tell the #lunaticInChief that alliances matter as a guarantee for safety and stability - two terms he sadly doesn't seem to care about. #saveTheUS now, #impeachTrump #endTheMadness.
If things keep going the way they're going, we'll take the USA's place as the strongest super power. This is an easy win for Europe if the orange terrorist keeps stealing all wealth from USians
Where I live the French, and Polish soldiers were the liberators and even some Georgians. We were and have been rightly grateful for that. But repayment should never extend to the support of the fascist elite, anywhere.
The EU and Canada gave help to Ukraine without forcing repayment. Only a gangster or a real estate man masquerading as a public servant could think of it as a reason for extortion.
No, I don't expect anything from Ukraine in return besides being the good citizens of Europe that they have proven to be. But if we send troops, I also hope that those servicemen and women are treated with respect. And I don't doubt Ukrainians will do so, being the honorable people they are.
I understand the feeling, but the problem arises from the President we picked, not the SecGen trying to not provoke a crisis. I think we need to say shame on Trump, not shame on the SecGen. Question 1 is what is the point of a member of NATO that threatens to invade fellow members' territory.
Trump at Putin's request turned off battlefield intell to Ukraine but NOT Russia so Putin could push Ukraine out of Kursk.
I read the latest show notes of Ukraine the latest, which you were interviewed for.
Q:Who decides to use your Twitter address not BlueSky. That's like turning off intelligence
We need a new NATO: NATO 2.
This would exclude all allies of Russia, starting with the United States.
It would also exclude, as it should now, any member who threatens another.
Surely, this is elementary?
I imagine these people feel like they're living in the court of Caligula. Placating a madman in the desperate hope they won't do something catastrophic.
I've no idea if ancient Rome had courts, but for the sake of my comparison, let's pretend it did.
Danish and Polish intelligence estimates that #Russia can test #NATO within 3-5 years.
Personally, I think Russia will do this much sooner, before they will never get a better opportunity than now when Trump is openly pro-Russian and openly undermining Article 5.
2-3 months in the future, when #Trump realizes that he cannot get either Russia or Ukraine to make peace (because peace is impossible given the parties' mutually exclusive war goals), Trump will lose interest and walk away.
Then the attack will come.
As OBrien has said before; the attack will be big enough to be an act of war, but small enough that the chance of a declaration of war by NATO countries is small.
Then NATO will be finished for good, and one of Russia's main goals will have been achieved.
The fact (a smiling) Rutte is saying nothing, says the other (in no way naive) majority member states of NATO, have already taken the appropriate steps needed to pre-empt all that.
Can't see good old Joe and Gen. Milly not having put precautions in place, and ultimately, it's the top (most intelligent and proven loyal to the constitution) echelon of the US military that will take the legs from under the unconstitutional bunch of gangsters in the White House if needs be.
Rutte's record is awful (budgetary austerity upon the EU/NATO, and consequently unilateral disarmament, decided that the NL didn`t need MBTs, shameful referendum on the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement, supported Nord Stream, despised openly his Mediterranean allies/partners...). So, no surprise.
‘Teflon Mark’s best quality as Dutch PM was that he can shrug of problems like water from a duck (and I hate him for that). That might work with docile Dutch politicians, but is deadly in todays international arena. Wrong man, wrong place, wrong time.
It would serve no purpose. Trump is like a child; it would only provoke him into making rash decisions. It's better to work behind the scenes. We should also build European security structures that works without of the US.
Watching Trumps minions, DC should be renamed "Pyongyang on the Potomac."
I think it is a joke, I mean Canada can literally turn off the lights.
I think it's just his way of applying maximum pressure.
I think that's why he stopped weapons deliveries and mil intelligence to Ukraine and then turned it back on when he got them to agree.
I agree with this point wholeheartedly, I understand diplomacy, but the man in the White House is nuts and everyone is allowing him to be nuts -there’s no push back or reining in from anyone in his own Gvt and, aside from the Canadian leadership team , there’s too much tolerance of his nuttiness
There will be no NATO anymore if he publicly objects. And there have been territorial quarrels between member states before. Namely, between Greece and Turkey.
Rutte tactis as we know m in the netherlands. Im suprised press told so little on it; you dont stay 12 pm if you did somethings right; hate it love it but he knows how to read people and when it is appropriate to comment or not. Rutte calls evrything a joke;if only to save his face in akward moments
Yes. Remember the response when her name was brought up? "NO, we can't have her! She eats Russians for breakfast every morning!" said by heads of govt/state in the collective West, all of whom were sitting/continue to sit in comfort, none of whom have had any direct experience of Russian aggression.
"We do not appreciate the Secr. Gen. of NATO joking with Trump about Greenland like this. It would mean war between 2 NATO countries. Greenland has just voted against immediate independence from Denmark & does not want to be American ever."
He was in Trump's house under cameras. As we know from the meeting with Zelensky, that is not the time or place to hold a discussion. No need to say the quiet part aloud. There was a reason there were 37 countries in Paris discussing Ukraine's security the other day and the US was not invited.
There is no point, and everyone knows that. But nobody knows yet what will replace it and hot to decouple the US from the rest of the alliance. And above all, nobody wants to trigger an even bigger crisis.
That's exactly who he is..
He was a bad choice for NATO as he has no backbone. 13years as a PM in NL paved the way to the fascist charlatans that are now creating chaos in Nl.. Expect that his neolib party can favor multinationals& the 1%while enabling fascists...
Always the biggest fake smile in the metting. Awful, but he's tall, thin and good English speaker. No doubt the best possible candidate to SG NATO.
I will never understand that decision. No surprises with the consequences.
Things will change if it escalates. I imagine Trump will try and push for a referendum. It won’t go his way. What happens next is where it gets interesting.
Explain also that a leader from the Netherlands forgets that a Canadian army liberated his country from the Germans in WW2. His countrymen certainly do not.
They forgot how many Dutch the Russians killed when shooting down the MH370/MAS370, and had a shameful referendum on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
Time for Canada to close the torpedo test range off Vancouver Island to US submarines and air force they use it regularly. Let them find their own nice piece of ocean bottom to ruin!
Great question. NATO has infrastructure, and the question if what that infrastructure looks like if the US were not there needs to answer your question. If it crumbles wtihout the US, then a new alliance on a balanced and upgraded footing. If not, then NATO is still relevant.
The NATO General Secretary is a shameless opportunist, and always has been. Regardless, when Vance gave his Munich speech, the United States essentially stepped out of NATO. It is a shame, and the other countries know it.

Rutte will try to unite NATO again against the threat of China and Russia in the Arctic region.
For no good reason. Kept us save for 80 years.
Guess Europe is soon back in the old killing mode - to face terrorist state Russia.
🇺🇸 is not gonna like a Europe with more than economic power.
Seems he agrees with Putin and Xi: A multipolar world of 3 authoritarian powers.
But he didn’t count on 🇪🇺 waking up.
Europe is gonna take the entire cake

Probably time for NATO to reconsider its membership list.
I'll say it again.
Trump ?
LOL.
(But in all seriousness, isn't everybody tired of hearing the same old bullshot from Trump, day in and day out ?)

As the saying goes: "We only need to get lucky once; they need to be lucky every time."
I will never understand that decision. No surprises with the consequences.
Regardless I hope Rutte and Europe are actively preparing for the worst instead of holding their tongues and hoping hell magically change
