we can recognise artistry and uniqueness and even just pure enjoyment and talk it up, but the moment someone dislikes it (be it for good or bad reasons) people will just immediately go into this stupid "haha yeah it's so bad, us fans are so delusional, it does suck haha" shtick

tbc, it's good to be critical. i think it's extremely important to be critical, *especially* of the things you like.
but if you like smth that is janky/weird/etc, you should understand and accept why you like it. don't give in to a half-ironic dismissal of your own tastes in art

a janky game I like has consistently been disliked by everyone else I've seen stream it. doesnt mean I hate it, still occasionally speedrun it, but I no longer recommend it to anyone. some of them are actually bad and can only be enjoyed by sickos like me. like I gained perspective, it's not shtick

Just got reminded that the happiest game of my childhood was Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa. Took me over 10 years to even find the name again... and there is no virus free version to download anywhere.
