Same!! I just got luck being in the right place at the right time with elements that really spoke to my agent *personally*. And it took a bit to find that person it clicked with too.

Yes of COURSE craft goes into it, and learning how to tell a story and craft a proper query. But you can do all those things, write an intriguing, polished book, and still not get signed. Luck is such a huge factor in publishing and I really wish people mentioned that more

I'm starting to realize this! I knew agents received a lot of queries, but I didn't realize that some get 2k in the span of a few months 😳 while story is inherently about heart and emotion, money will always drive attitudes. We just need to hold onto our love for writing and keep on keeping on ❤️

Exactly! I always like to put it into the perspective of me as a reader as well. I read a lot of books, and there are so many books I read where I enjoy it and think the writing is great, but VERY few books speak to me on a personal level, and that connection is what agents are looking for too.

An excellent point. I don't know how many times I've put down a book because I'm simply not in the right mood for it...only to give it another go months later and inhale it like a rabid kirby. Agents are readers, and readers have moods!

and sometimes, even, the book needs a load of edits but it's highly marketable so an agent (or multiple) might pick it up even if the author's craft and abilities AREN'T as high as the next person who has more knowledge but a less marketable book!

SOOOO true too. The current market has *so* much to do with which books are picked up and which ones are passed over and that makes it tough as authors because you could just get lucky and be writing a book on trend or you're stuck with no offers because no one thinks they can sell it.

absolutely!!!! it's frustrating, in all honesty 😂 cause u could be the best writer in the world but if you're not 1) lucky and 2) marketable, you're less likely to get anywhere!

Hahaha yep 😐 that's why you always just have to keep going in hopes you get lucky eventually but it's so hard when so much of it isn't in your control!
