As far as I can tell Yarvin's popularity among the silicon valley crowd dates back to a Slate Star Codex post. Scott Alexander actually *is* smart and devious and argued for Yarvin's stupid ideas more persuasively than Yarvin could.

it's more complicated than that and I struggle to distill it. a while ago someone said he was the absolute best at seeming Reasonable, and he is; inasmuch as he pushes a point of view it's mostly by just asking questions ad infinitum.
