Makes me think that when one has been taught transference/countertransference is “bad” (as many, many are these days - as I was often taught in grad school), it’s protective to one’s self-esteem (or I suppose one’s grandiosity) to deny ever having encountered it.

It’s why being a therapist is so exhausting at times - managing those processes so that they don’t get in the way, and also being compassionate and helpful! It uses a lot of energy.

I wrote a blog post about transference many years ago. Many people commented that they were transferred/terminated by therapists who said they weren't *allowed* to have transference feelings. I thought they must have been mistaken, no therapist would do that.

Turns out I was the mistaken one.
