As a reader, short and pithy is good. Suffering from Substack overload. Too many are the usual suspects writing about the usual subjects and saying nothing new. Surprise me. Make your argument and use the numbers to back it up. Having read some of your stuff I think you can nail this. Good luck.

As a writer I would say that unless you are charging don’t commit to any particular time interval. That way you can write multiple things when you have inspiration and/or lots is happening and then you can chill when you don’t have much to say! Also Substack is great for graphs and tables.

I've been trying to write more on substack but the time is always a challenge and it feels more like something has to be 'finished' than just sharing a chart and a few thoughts. I suspect to be a success you probably have to dedicate a specific bit of time to it or just use as an outlet for blogs.

Make sure you’re doing something all the existing Substacks aren’t. Pithy and set yourself a regular rhythm. Include at least one chart that will go viral. Make sure each post has an argument to it. I have faith you can do all of these!

As a reader, shortish is good. I think the best substacks tend to have one point made really well. If you are interested in education, I think @daisychristo.bsky.social is a master at this on her substack. Ben’s recent one on his prediction failure also a great example.

And the only one I actually pay for is @samfr.bsky.social and @ldfreedman.bsky.social so you can tell that I really value their insights. There are loads out there so need to have a compelling reason if you want to charge.
