The Difference Between TikTok and Free Expression | @theatlantic.com
The algorithmic manipulation of users’ attention is not the same thing as actual human speech.
The U.S. never opposed authoritarianism, it just finally started turning much more of that brutality in on itself as people began to see and talk about its 232 years of tyranny upon the world.
This time I beg to differ. While I'm not a supporter of the United States and I strongly oppose their imperialism, it's important to recognise that #TikTok is first and foremost CCP spying tool. Nations should be more vigilant about this kind of tool from China.
They don't care about protecting your information or data, hence why they didn't feel like answering why it's ok for American companies to do the same thing. The government has been completely hijacked by oligarchs.
Banning an app which the enemy uses to steer your crowds towards stupidity is authoritarianism? I think some mechanisms are needed when certain standards are not met.
Meta is used by russian bots to steer the election? Ban. It wasn't Meta's fault? Well it doesn't have good enough security.
The U.S. banning TikTok to 'protect' its citizens- while mirroring China's own internet censorship- couldn’t be more ironic. But instead of isolating us, this move has only driven Americans to RedNote, where cross-border dialogue is thriving. More on my substack
@theintercept.com having rules crafted by elected legislators doesn't mean authoritarianism. The government bans all sorts of websites, this isn't new. Russia & China's strategy of causing social tension and divisions in American society is well publicized and studied. Where is your journalism?
I thought we’re the defender of the market force. Using the conservative pretended logic, the market corrects itself & the government should stay sideline. According to this conservative’s principle, if TikTok is so evil, the users will leave for another app. So why rush to violate your own belief?
I'm not conservative, this measure has bi-partisan support. Any government's first and primary responsibility is the safety and security of its people. This has nothing to do markets, economics or partisan politics. This is about China being in a cold war with the west.
America's enemies won't spare you because of your political beliefs, they want your destruction all the same. America's economic power, foreign interests and influences are opposed to China's. Both countries anticipate an actual war within a decade over Taiwan. Now let's talk about tiktok lol.
That left us the 2nd goal - to protect the South Pacific corridor. On that, we have much better chance by building a reliable alliance with ASEAN country. And that will give us enough chips to work with China to figure out an agreement to share the corridor.
that might be a nice foreign policy, I don't want to debate that. But the facts as they are today is that China is a cold-war enemy of the US and is working to destabilize america. Unless you share that sentiment, why would you oppose this?
If we can agree that, we can work on a thesis what we can achieve and what we can’t. First of all, China also treat Taiwan as an important of its defense of the mainland. The problem is it is much closer to them than us. So for us to find that cause, we have to invest more (money and life).
Let’s talk about Taiwan. First, let’s get rid of the bullshit that the reason we want to defend the democracy. The reason we want Taiwan is because it allows us to contain China (regardless it is a democratic country or not) and our South Pacific oath to Indianan ocean.
how about we don't talk about Taiwan? It's always a bad idea to negotiate with an enemy that is actively attacking you. Let's instead talk about how to prepare for a potential war with China, or how to get China to stop being hostile? First step: permit US social media, and the US will allow Tiktok.
If the U.S. was "embracing the type of internet authoritarianism it long opposed", Musk and Zuckerberg's pro Putin echo chambers would have been closed long ago.
Am I the only one thinking they’re really hasn’t been much in the way of technology that has improved my life since maybe windows 95? Bluesky is nice but is it better than a combo of NYTimes and local papers circa 2000? Nope. All this social media should go, we’d be happier and better informed
I have yet to see a platform that isn’t biased. The solution is to allow access to the widest possible range of biases, and to limit data collection practices industry-wide. The threshold to ban a platform should be very high—proven criminal activity or a true national emergency.

TikTok is a China spy and influence tool…
It needs to die or be taken over by someone else that is non-biased

Otherwise you take the power from the societies to enemy bot campaigns, AI powered to divide you.
#InternetFreedom #DigitalSolidarity
Republicans need this to control media, so it will be allowed to stay, but will be controlled by trumpgov.
Not everything is zero-sum game.
No I'm sure you can find other incorrect people to ignore all the advances and agree with you.
Not comparable at all. It's crazy to think this is a newspaper.
Completely agree with social media making people unhappy.
