dude any time i would copy something in KDE wayland it would have like a 25% chance of working and then when i switched to X it worked every fucking time and it was pissing me off

There's actually two things going on here. X11 is being phased out, and so are tray icons (Mostly due to gnome, but they make GTK).

As a result, the tray situation on Wayland is a disaster.

I discovered this when wanting to add a tray icon to a rust/GTK/Relm4 app I'm writing.

Apparently a lot of the desktop Linux community decided tray icons were bad somewhere around 2006, and the phaseout is just now finally happening - perfectly coinciding with Wayland.

They argue there's replacement APIs, but not actually for all use-cases or desktop environments.

I don't just mean old desktop environments. I use sway (which is a wayland-only WM) and want/need tray icons. I'm currently hunting for a new workflow.

yeahhh- the x compatibility ends somewhere and turns out it often ends far earlier than many would like it to... and now depending on your expertise you either give up, switch back to X, or port the thing or the dependency, not really any other way out

and as to why every distro is forcing wl by default? i believe it's a mix of the features most users need already being stable *enough* and it adding features that lots of users loose it over if they're missing, like fractional scaling and vrr support... but i get it that all of that is a tradeoff
