The US Copyright Office came out with a new report regarding AI & copyright. I read the 50 page report this morning. In the report, the USCO pretty clearly upholds its previously-established precedent that *purely* AI generated content cannot be copyrighted, because there is not sufficient human authorship. From page #18 of the report: 3/

In fact, they even give an example of using Midjourney where it really doesn't matter how much "effort" you put into "crafting" a written prompt, or how detailed or long the prompt is, they still equate it to rolling a dice or spinning a roulette wheel. From page #20: 4/

Where things seem to get a little muddier to me is when AI is used as "assistive". They go through several examples, and ultimately land on (to me, at least), it depends case-by-case. Where the human has control, you can copyright that portion, where the machine is making things up, you cannot. 6/

They go into an example of entering in your own illustration and altering it with a text prompt, similar to the AI app "Vizcom" which translates human sketches into AI rendered outputs based on text prompts. 7/
