It's estimated to cost $1/3 trillion, but as anyone who follows any government project, let alone a defence one, this will be about 3x more in cost. For what? So we can become a southern hemisphere arm of the US navy?

It doesn't defend our shores, it makes us a target. Why? To contain China?

Instead the money would be better spent on submarines to protect our coastline, naval patrol boats to protect our economic zone and long range missiles/drones.

The money left over, of which there will be billions could go to foreign aid, to bolster influence in the Oceania region to circumvent

Then we start on ANZUS, another treaty that has zero impact for us but has cost us thousands of lives and billions of dollars fighting American wars.

The USA will no more provide a nuclear umbrella than they would for Europe. They don't want to be nuked themselves. They certainly don't want to die for some other country (totally understandable).
