The EU would love the UK back if it were willing to commit fully to the EU and its ideals. There would be support for fast track accession talks. Two major problems: UK exceptionalism and Hungarian veto

Just off the record comments by EU officials suggesting the UK is reluctant to move forward on the reset that the EU would like to see going much faster and much deeper. Trump/Ukraine have created a huge opportunity for the UK in Brussels but Starmer does not appear willing to seize it.

No real evidence then, EU officials do not speak for the 27 member states. One thing we know about the EU is it's a rules based organisation, that's how it's survived for so long. Even if we we're fast tracked we're talking 5 years. Starmer is doing exactly what you ask, a closer relationship.

In Brussels you hear 3-5 years as a possibility. But that window is now beginning to close because of GE 2029. The feeling is that the reset is too unambitious on Starmer‘s part and progress will get slower still as ´29 approaches. The hope now is that the Trump fiasco will cause Starmer to rethink
