It's a gentle ambition, but it's my ambition. It's a patient ambition. It's a thoughtful, slow, and careful ambition. I didn't think the words "careful" and "ambitious" could coexist in a person when I was younger, but here I am, careful and overthinking yet so driven to work for greater heights.

There was a coworker that another coworker & I described (very fondly!) as "ruthlessly competent." Decisive, skilled, unshaken, a master of her work. When I think about my ambition, it's not to be at the top or have more than others. It's to be known that way: as so utterly, devastatingly competent.

I didn't know this about myself in my 20s. I knew I was a hard worker who'd work any job. I knew I had high standards for myself. But I didn't see myself as this person who'd ask herself, "What projects can I take on and master in the next few years to get a promotion?" I never had the chance.

It's incredible to think there are parts of me I haven't met yet. There are facets of me that, under the right circumstances, blossom and take shape and redefine who I am to me. Sadie in her 20s was a hard worker. Sadie in her 30s is, surprisingly, quietly ambitious.
