I’m likely getting back into teaching and I was never strict from the get-go… the idea of doing that at all feels bad.

I'm strict in my journalism class because, well, deadlines are kinda important there. BUT I still work with my students when they are truly struggling, no matter what! I even tell them if they email me before the due date idc why. I gave one kid an extension cuz it was his birthday. XD

I had this experience too. I noticed it mostly in freshman, who are typically enrolled in gigantic courses where the professors are usually more strict (for logistics reasons probably). I only ever had ~30 students per class so I could easily handle a couple one-off makeup exams/quizzes.

Yep, exactly this. He's a freshman and I think he's suffering from a little bit of shock from the difference from high school, coupled with just life struggles. I also have a cap of 30 so the handful of students who need more attention from me get it without much hardship on my part!
