They're definitely not bad but they're way closer to "decently large regional tournament" than they are to a con, even conceptually.

Cons have a non-gameplay reason to go like panels, celebrities, exhibitions, and that kind of thing and F2F generally does none of that.

F2F definitely doesn't do those things, but they also don't charge you just to attend the event. So there is a reason they don't do those extras, they can't afford them.

The real problem exists in convincing people to pay to attend the event, so they can afford those extras.

From my understanding speaking with some folks at Magicon Chicago, they want each Magicon to POP off and be the biggest in the region. LA/Chicago are the safest staples with each one having an increase in attendees (FF LA will no doubt be HUGE). Third one is to gauge 'interest' every year

I genuinely do wonder why they haven't tried to do more MagicCons outside the US. I know I live here and get the benefits of those type of events being here, but Magic does exist outside of this country. WoTC not branching out is odd to me.

Might be. Probably a lot of initial investment to get an event set up outside of where they normally do it. It's one of the reasons I miss the era of Grand Prix events and SCG Tour stuff on a weekly basis. It felt like everywhere was catered for. I'm guessing we'll never see that ever again.

I mean - they announced they would come back to Europe after this year. Barcelona did poorly so they didn't plan one after Amsterdam and then Amsterdam popped off, so they made plans to go back next year.

They had venue and attendee satisfaction issues.

People passed out due to heat. Some came 1 day and didn’t come back. Could be a quality concern more than profit.

They had to abandon the Japan con entirely late in planning.

I suspect they took the path of least resistance this year to regroup.

I know people on the vendor side who already had their booth reserved and Japan business visas approved before that stop was canceled.

One bad experience and one full rug pull out of 5 attempts in a year at their premier public offering. I’d want to get a few easy wins while re-strategizing too.

They do seem actually responsive to attendee feedback. Every major complaint about Chicago '24 (play space, panel noise, etc) was addressed significantly with '25.
Can't do much about "It's so hot you'll pass out" though, that is a real concern.

There were criticisms of things going on, but I don't remember "Barcelona was a disaster"?
