It's ok if Pokémon isn't someone's jam, but I don't see why people would say it's not a "real RPG." Debates surrounding genres are common and I see interesting discussions on whether Zelda, Dark Souls, or even Symphony of the Night are RPGs, but I feel like Pokémon is, like... unambiguously an RPG.

Coincidentally playing Yellow Legacy right now. It's awesome.
As for not counting Pokemon as a real RPG, I dunno. I think it's mostly Nintendo fans in denial that they love a JRPG.

It's the most popular RPG franchise period. More than Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Quest, or any Atlus game. It's hard to imagine someone born in the 90's or later getting into the genre without Pokemon playing some role.

Damn, Legend of Legaia is quite the name drop. Played a demo of it. Don't remember much beyond how characters kept saying things along the lines of, "Things aren't normally like this, but it's the demo version."

Star Wars Kotor made me an RPG fan, but Pokemon and Mario RPGs were always the RPGs that I liked before I was a fan (if that makes sense). Without them I don't think I would have given Kotor a fair shake despite loving Jade Empire before it.
