Literacy is a big part of the problem, but so is the widepsread lack of a tertiary education.
Critical thinking is a skill that is usually acquired at university level.

You know why? Our culture had to be granted the opportunity to read. We weren't allowed too. We had to sneak and read books.
When given that opportunity our families "MADE" us read so we wouldn't appear uneducated so learning became the norm.
