Actually, if you remember from Saturday Night Live, Ford turned them into lighters. The Pintos only caught on fire when rear ended. The gas tank would push into the back seat and puncture.

My Pinto ran like a dream! 😃 I don't remember the specific years. The model that would start on fire was produced for only two years.
The profit/loss statement leaned into the potential number of lives lost was worth the risk. 😢

I spent my career as a Letter Carrier. About twice a year I would have a Certified letter to someone from a tow company. Ppl would be confused. I learned to ask them if they had sold a car without going to DMV to pay to transfer the title. Answer was always no. Owner on title liable for tow fee here
