My son is terrified of this and I keep telling him we have social media now and people will always be watching. People didn't really know what was happening then. But i think I am also trying to convince myself 😔

Sadly, social media landed us w Trump as president again. Even with all that said, look at how many un/ ill-informed people are only now just waking up to all of his promises and policies. Latinos saying, "I didn't know that was his plan to deport us." Journalist at the ground level are needed.
As parents a lot of us are doing that. I can't tell my young adult daughter, with her 1st real world job, that this is history repeating itself, but I want to scream it every damn day. She's active, protests, donates & votes. But that might not be enough going forward.
It might be worth considering dropping hints. Let her down easy, rather than letting her have a hellish revelation later on. Though everyone handles these things differently so idk.
She's actually way smarter than me. Resourceful too. (I made sure of that) We both know how things are likely to turn out, what's coming next, but I know she will do the right thing. She's an artist, she's got mad skills (communication)!

I'll be honest, that part pisses me off. I'm only 48, in heart failure after a lifetime of issues, but don't eat sugar, only approved foods, do yoga, work out every day, no smoking, no drugs, no alcohol, meditation, proper meds. But that tub of lard gets to escape all consequences in everything.
