It’s true. The exec producer of Highway, Bill Ward, a veteran of TV, agreed to read Moffat’s script. Ward’s partner, Sandra Hastie became Press Gang’s producer. That’s how Moffat’s pro writing career began.

I saw it for the first time in the 90s when Nickelodeon repeated it and I was stunned at how good it was. The way it shifted from outright comedy to breaking your heart in seconds. The episode where a gas explosion drops a record shop on Spike is one that leaves your jaw dropping.

I did drunkenly tell Moffat at a party once that he was responsible for me becoming a journalist. These days, given the state of the industry I’d probably demand an apology instead. But it’s hard to underestimate the amazing legacy that show had really.
