Also if South Pole station were to be abandoned, it’s likely that other nations (China? Russia? Chile? Argentina?) would seek to occupy the station built by U.S. taxpayers.
Most the U.S. Antarctic Program is run by contractors and it’s not clear if the contract would be subject to any reduction in force. But NSF employees do play a significant role in overseeing these operations. So if they were to be slashed it’s likely the contract would need to be terminated.
If the polar program was spared and the RIF goes ahead, then this would mean even larger cuts to NSF program staff likely ending much research funding.
