In walkable cities, we're never going to get rid of cars completely. But, making cities safer to pedestrians helps disabled people. For instance, wheelchair users are more likely to be killed by cars. It doesn't have to be this way.

A 2022 study found, for instance, that a modest increase in walkability meant disabled people took transit 33 percent more often than before—likely because better walkability made transit stops easier to get to. Walkability can help disabled people have autonomy.

Thank you for writing this article! As a person with MS, my near future, unfortunately, includes a wheelchair. I’ve always been an outside person, I.e. walking, exploring, meeting people, taking photos…being part of my community. My mobility is declining and I’m /1

Actively researching a city to move to because of it. Accessibility is in my top 5 things it must have. I wish people, orgs and gov’t better understood there is such a HUGE difference between walkable/accessible. I wish some even cared enough to learn. Again…thank you. /2

Thank you for reading! (also, I know it's expensive, but I think SF is fairly accessible in the scheme of things/not the cold if that's a chronic illness trigger).
