I think that entire section of FOTR was forgettable and a waste of everyone's time.

The books were too long; we didn't need a digression with an irrelevant character.

But it's par for the course for Tolkien. Truthfully, the writing in LOTR isn't very good.

The Hobbit, now that's another story.

Bombadil is not irrelevant, he is critical to how Tolkien was exploring ideas about power. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not important. And also, he's just a fun character. And clearly it's not a forgettable section, because you dislike it so much.

It's irrelevant. It's not important to the story and should have been removed to make the story more coherent and readable.

There's a reason why he was removed from the movies.

Similarly, Beorn is unnecessary in The Hobbit. Accordingly, in the Rankin/Bass movie, Beorn was omitted.
