Eby doesn't have to get rid of the carbon tax, the BC NDP have a majority, they could simply rebrand it the "Environmental Rebate" or something.
But it's easier to do the wrong thing than to stand up for the right thing.

But hey, maybe the BC NDP are gonna use some of that centrist sneakiness (that they usually employ to support big industry while pretending that's not what they're doing) to bring back the carbon tax under a different name that won't be as controversial. I doubt it, but I'd love to be wrong.

Maybe they're gonna keep the rebate? But it's paid for by the tax, so I don't know how that would work.
Anyway, what matters is that this is the outcome of centrists once again letting conservatives control a conversation. It always bites everyone in the ass and yet centrists keep allowing it.

I wish BC had joined the federal program when the feds brought it in. My family doesn’t get a rebate and we don’t make a crazy amount of money. Too many families in the province are struggling and the rebate could have really helped with that. The rest of the country was blind from propaganda.

The cons turned 'carbon tax' into such a hot potato that promoting it at this stage could mean they win the next fed election - an even worse outcome imo. Hopefully if the libs get in they'll have something to replace the rebate loss.

The carbon taxes was/is simply political sophistry. There is no proof that it works. The key to reducing GHG emissions is to aggressively and pragmatically electrify everything.

Not a very good way to do wealth redistribution as it also taxes municipal governments and NGOs, like food banks, among others. Also the wealth redistribution aspects of the program would erode as the programs more insidious aspects take hold, like converting for food crops into energy.
