Everyone got a letter from my kid's hs yesterday saying that some kids had left school to attend a deportation protest nearby and we should encourage our kids to find safe ways to assert their beliefs ON campus. This is the same 15yo who got birthday money from aunts and uncles and grandparents and kind of looked at it and said, "But I don't really need anything else" and sent it all to charity. We traded "role model" places years ago and she still tells me I'm the greatest 🥲

Sometimes I feel like there is a cynical view in this world that good people are rare. So if good happens adjacent to someone you think is good, it must be due to that One Rare Good Person. Nah. Doing good is a choice literally anyone can decide to make at any time, no matter their influences.

It does not take any kind of special hand-raised person to do a good thing. Literally all it takes is a choice in a given moment. Anyone at any age of any background can do it.

I once spoke with a guy that does cybersecurity and penetration testing (basically being paid to break into businesses). He said that contrary to popular belief, the default behaviour of most people is kindness. Most of the ways he gets into buildings is because someone held a door open for him.

In my experience, the kindest people tend to shrug off compliments and are sometimes even puzzled by praise for what seems to them a natural reaction to circumstances. It’s presumptuous of me to say so, but I’m guessing that both you and your daughter may have that trait.
