Sidewalk pavers vs concrete?

I’m watching a crew tear up this very recently laid concrete on Lawrence Ave. I’m not sure what the project is but it got me thinking of the many countries I’ve visited where sidewalks are, as a rule, made of pavers.

Does that allow for easier maintenance?
