If the govt want a waffly side step solution they should honestly just make up an excuse for Micheál to be unavailable last minute, publish a letter of apology saying how great the American people are etc, and send our most socially awkward junior minister instead. A semi plausibly deniable snub.

I'm not exactly the world's biggest fan of SF but jesus wept, politicians accusing other politicians of "playing politics" does my head in. Yes, they are in fact playing politics. They're politicians. That's their job. Yours too, it turns out.
