The phrase “knock on wood” - or “touch wood” in the UK - is an ancient one deriving from the belief that tapping on trees awakes the gods and spirits that reside within them and brings good luck.

I love folklore like that and the fact we actively remember in a sense of still touching wool for luck. And in many areas pulling a spoon through an egg shell after you've eaten the innards or added it to a bowl/pan to stop witches using it for a boat. Delightful that we still follow.
