Which is why I’d fire them if it were my team. It’s also why Lovie Smith will never get another HC job. You’re either a part of the Super Bowl winning mission, or you’re not. Mayo is a micro thinker in a macro world.
How hard would it have been to insert Brissett in the 2nd half with instructions to hand the ball off even in some obvious passing situations? Milton was starving for opportunity. This was a shortcut on the rebuild handed to them and they blew it, incredibly frustrating but predictable for this team
The worst thing here is the possibility that not only do they screw themselves out of draft capital, it increases the likelihood that Kraft will do the wrong thing and give Mayo another year.
It requires an intervention between the front office and coaching staff. A deliberate decision to run the ball in passing situations. And most importantly, benching ALL of your starters. If you wanna win a Super Bowl, you need everyone on mission. Patriots cost themselves 2-3 high picks today.
That’s why you bench everyone and run the ball in passing situations. If I’m GM, those orders are being issued. If you wanna keep your job, you’re following my orders. New England is a rudderless ship with multiple incompetents trying to steer it.
I be don’t blame the players at all. But the coaching staff and front office have to have a longer term view than just this one game. For instance, there’s no reason for the starting WRs to be on the field in a game you have to lose to get the top pick.
The backup WR's are going to be the ones who those top picks put out of a job, and have no reason to have a longer view than today. For them it's ball out like you've never done before or enter the normal workforce.
Same way you get beef in those lesser bowl games. Nobody wants it to end like this.
They often don't. But sometimes you never know what existential career desperation might do as a motivating factor for someone... or at the very least, the motivation to knock the team's pick down below where they can find the guy they want at your position (see also: Raiders, QB).
Coaching staff is likely under the same pressure as the players. There's gonna be a lot of coaches fired tomorrow hoping they can save their jobs today. The good pick doesn't do them any good if it's their replacement making it.
