For clarity, we're not "rich". We rent a flat in Berlin and we saved up to buy a rundown flat on the Northern coast to retire to. Now this 100% "second home premium" on our council tax means an extra £200 per month we have to pay – just for the sin of having planned ahead as a mixed UK/EU couple.

Maybe you should consider having tenants in it for the time being? I am not a fan of landlordism but it might alleviate the financial struggles. Also you would need to think a about a different moniker after cutting ties with UK! How terrible would that be?

No tenants. We've spent too much money on it for that. It's also too much trouble, to be honest. As my Anglophile other half said, she's now been stopped from living in England twice. Once from living there permanently, and now from living there part time.

It's partly a council thing, but also if the house is rented out (not sure for how long, whether tenants need to be permanent or whether air BnB is ok) you *don't* get charged.

So furious! If we were in prison or rented the place out as an air B&B for 9 weeks a year, we wouldn't be fined. But because it's Brexit that's stopping us living there permanently, they want us to pay double or even quadruple the council tax! How is this even legal?
