Of course any govts that sat back and took US tariffs without retaliation wouldn't last a year in power due to domestic reaction -so that's a rather pointless expectation on Trump's part.

Actually, I rather think doing nothing isn't a bad idea – unless you target MAGA states. Trump's tariffs on Europe and China etc will hurt Ameicans. European tariffs on US products would increase inflation in Europe and hurt Europeans. A Dexter-style scalpel will do better than a sledgehammer.

That's what Canada did. Very red state targeted tariffs to inflict maximum political discomfort.
Of course the outrage with Trump there is compounded by Trump's threat to erase Canada as a nation, which is the biggest issue in it's current election.
