Valid, but as a caveat your DM (if they're any good) will appreciate it SO MUCH if you add at least ONE thing about your character they can use as potential hooks.

You're character is searching for a one-armed man. Boom! DM can plant rumors about such a person. They never take off a pendant. Oh no! Your character is beaten but instead of killing you the enemy takes it and runs off!
