"A Multiyear drought event" is defined as a spatiotemporal assemblage of land that experienced at least two consecutive drought years, which is thresholded with the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotraspiration Index (SPEI).

From 1980 to 2018, these events reached broader terrestrial land by ca. 50,000 square kilometres (more than the area of Switzerland!!!) per year and were associated with an increase in greenness declines of natural vegetation, while the response of vegetation varied with ecosystem types.

Looking forward, improving both mechanistic understandings of the development of these multiyear drought events, as well as the functional responses of vegetation that are often hard to capture by moderate remote-sensed products, is important to better prepare for such events in the future.
