I marched with an old friend I hadn't seen for years, along with her wife, and her 92-year-old mother-in-law. But what brought me the most hope was a woman carrying a sign that read, "My first march in 52 years." People who took their rights for granted and were never active are waking up.

PS. My poster is a quote from one of my heroes, Fannie Lou Hamer. Her family were sharecroppers, she had to drop out of school to help support them. She was shot at, beaten, arrested, for trying to vote.

She was one of the founders of Freedom Summer, and the Mississippi Freedom Party - and she forced LBJ to seat her party's delegates at the Democratic Natl Convention. She is a lodestar in my firmament.
