I think there are three separate issues:
1) Sky & co forcing viral and clickable content, hence the controversial takes and top 6 centric
2) Giving most screen time to ex-pros who are often not as well versed beyond “they wanted it more” analysis
3) Fan media is just very very good now

I don’t think I’ve watched a single bit of “analysis” on Sky or BT last year. I have around 300hrs worth of listening to Arsenal podcasts last year (granted a few times I fell asleep and they were on through the night). Preview pod before the game, instant reaction after, analysis day after. WhySky?

The price is just ridiculous now for what you get. I'm currently out in Canada and here you can get every game (not just the chosen ones) for $29.99 a month which is £16.50. We are robbed blind in the UK by Sky and TNT

For what it is worth, 24 TV channel setup demands content and with limited quality content available, the channels are filling up with a mixture of repeating sensational nonsense or just thin material that is poorly analysed.

Good listen this mate. I vaguely remember TNT (think it was BT then) having a European football show with knowledgeable folk on but the viewing figures weren't good enough. Or rather, they could fill that time with cheaper content. A shame as I'm growing tired of the Neville & Friends overload.

The younger generation want bitesize bits of information - also why video content is so popular - over a deep dive on leagues. Imagine it as reading the Wikipedia page of a film rather than watching it. Football has also priced them out of going to games so maybe it feels less important to them?

A couple thoughts, after watching the video.

1. It isn't just the top clubs that are covered, it's the "traditional" top clubs. If the coverage were hyper-focused on the 4 clubs at the top of the table, I might understand it. But, clubs that have risen are often ignored in favor of old favorites.

2. Coverage in general, including in-match commentary, suffers from more than just a gap in the amount of coverage but a gap in the tone of the coverage. Teams outside the traditional big clubs are treated, at best, with indifference, are patronized, and, at worst, treated with a mocking sneer.

Way past time all games were available to watch on TV. Ridiculous that people not physically strong (or rich) enough can't see their teams play.

Poeple find their own ways around this and money is going elsewhere.

Commentators shoe horning pre planned verses trying to sell the game, punditry at an all time low, telling us the bloody obvious, TNT particularly poor. Sky fees v costs abroad would rather watch the game with no commentary, have a tea and a piss at half time, then watch the 2nd half.

With Rory Smith/Julien Laurens on the CL highlights show, I do think next year's MOTD will continue that but so much coverage could be enhanced with a journalist like James Horncastle etc adding their knowledge.

Some interesting observations. But I genuinely think that we're reaching the end game of TV channels as we know them. This sort of stuff will be distributed online, on demand. It already is to an extent, just not by the mainstream providers.

Enjoyed this mate. As a football nerd/pervert, I would 100% watch any magazine shows on the lower divs + France,Italy, Denmark, you name it. The landscape has changed though, sadly & shows like Revista & Gazetta are a thing of the past on TV. A collaborative YouTube channel could pull it off though.

TNT had the nearest thing to what you are describing with the UCL goals show.
Proper knowledge in each of the big leagues like Horncastle, Laurens & Rafa and a great host in Jimbo. They could tell you why things were happening

Interesting thoughts. To me the biggest problem with all sports tv is the use of ex pros in preference to ‘proper’ journalists. People like Mark Chapman bring the fans outlook (no, Danny Baker is too much). 3 ex ManU players together bring no variety of thought. Sign me up for your new channel.

Absolutely bang on Dan, sky sports seem to think everyone wants to hear about the alleged top six all the time. This is so apparent on Monday night football when all they do is go on and on about Liverpool or Arsenals result on sat/sun rather than the two teams playing.

My problem is they are trying to appeal to people who aren't interested. They fill their shows with influencers and non football people, thus isolating people like me in their late 30s who have no interest. Teens and early 20s aren't watching as much tv, so it's basically self-destruction.

Brill 👍🏼 MUFC fan. Struggle with TV as same ‘pundits’ rehashing the same lazy opinions about same teams (MUFC mainly). Also, people like Horncastle fully earn their money. How can you say Sky’s pundits do when they often haven’t got a clue about the team/players they are getting paid to discuss?!
