I enjoyed The Discovery of Witches series by Deborah Harkness. It's science fiction, but Harkness is a history professor and filled books with interesting facts.
Yes! That one was my favorite. I found myself learning as I read. Intrigued enough to research things mentioned in the book. The mini series didn't do it justice. But I think that's the intrinsic flaw of any book to screen production. The director's vision will never match our elaborate visions.
Yes, he was very good. The actors that played Ysabeau and Gallowglass weren't what I imagined. But they did a good job acting. I'm looking forward to Gallowglass' own book.
Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
== Shards of Honor & Barrayar
Girl meets boy on alien planet. He is known as The Butcher of Komarr. Of course she finds him irresistible.
Devil is in the details.
Warriors Apprentice
Vor Game
Cetaganda
Brothers in Arms
Mirror Dance
love Brandon Sanderson Stormlight Archive series - but it's a lot
I low key love the Twilight series (yeah it's mainstream but the first book just reels you in)
I love Charlaine Harris's series, there are several. I also really like the Inheritance Games series - it is a YA series but it's fun
The Wheel of Time
I started the long series in the harshest part of my life, and the hunt for first edition paperbacks for this was fun and gave me a positive distraction from like. Also story is fire and Rand al’Thor is one of my all time favorite fantasy characters.
Foundation by Asimov. I’ve certainly read more updated series regarding Sci-Fi but this was my first series as a kid and nostalgia reigns. The plot is still so fascinating to me, especially its scope.
I really like the Shardlake series by CS Sansom, and Horrible Histories by Terry Deary is pretty much a perfect blend of fact and silly to get kids learning without realising.

(my serious answer is the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett)
Maybe most fascinating, interesting lead character ever created.
