Personally don't get the hard to sign up thing with mastodon and only half agree that it's hard to visit profiles. It's not that confusing if you understand federation.
You could make a "federated" point at least to give mastodon credit where it's due because that's a positive for many reasons imo.

I simply don't think the erasure of choice in a non federated social platform could ever be a positive to me. People need to stop valuing convenience over flexibility. If bluesky gets bought by a billionaire I hate I will probably leave, if that happens to my mastodon server I can just move.

Actually, I haven't thought about that benefit Mastodon has.

As user, it was confusing for me to choose my Mastodon instance and I had experienced that I couldn't interact with some toots from certain users from other instances. That's what I actually meant.

Mastodon is essentially thousands of tiny versions of twitter that can interact with each other. Individuals or organisations can start their own new server or choose one to join that aligns with their interests. A benefit of this of this is that it can't be destroyed by one guy buying it.

I'll admit this makes it more initially confusing and puts more requirements on the user to make a choice of where to join but actually having a choice is more than can ever be said of a platform run by a single business entity.

There is also the issue of a link to a post taking you to the other persons server but if you know where you're based it's usually easy to switch to viewing that post from your own server with a popup showing when you click into a post on a server you are not a member of.

One thing to note is that if the mastodon server you're using were to be purchased by a shitty billionaire there is an established process for migrating accounts meaning it's quite likely you will be able to avoid deletig the entirety of your presence there by just migrating it to somewhere new.

Mastodon also does: Follow hashtags. You can kinda so the same via lists, but it’s so simple anyone can do it for something no-one else has set up in moments.

I don’t really think the X’es for Mastodon make sense. It’s super easy to sign up if you just go with the default. To see someone’s profile, you do the exact same thing you do here: Click the profile. Reach can vary, but my experience is that more people see, comment and like on Mastodon vs here.

Yeah, I think it depends from experience to experience.

Sometimes I see that certain topics gain more attention on Mastodon than on Twitter.

I made often the experience if a Mastodon account from another instance is quite old, you don't see its toots anymore. It was hard to choose an instance.

I disagree. It might be easy technically, but in a practical sense its not. You have to make a choice where to go right in the beginning. Even if its one of the bigger servers, it means doing research. Moving servers is also not hassle-free. Sure its all doable, but its not easy for the uninitiated.

Agreed. Often to their own detriment. Sadly that also means they don’t get to experience the benefits. Mastodon is not just Mastodon, after all. It also lets you interact with Pixelfed, Lemmy, Wordpress and anything else that implements ActivityPub.

As someone who is only on the mastodon side of things, I understand, but at the same time, there is SO MUCH stuff in the world to interact with, I don't have the bandwidth to interact with more right now.

It is, however, the only place you can do that - which is a notch in Mastodon’s belt. Here, we are just as beholden to the platform owner as on Twitter. Talking about and designing federation is not the same as federation. At least there is a bridge of sorts to Mastodon from here, but that’s it.

Someone I spoke with recently said they don't like that the Fediverse is so fragmented vs all the posts in one place like on Bluesky and Twitter.

Yeah, I share this opinion. Personally, I prefer all posts on one place.

I guess since everyone can set their own Mastodon instance it wouldn't be easy to have all the toots on one place.
