Yes, a couple of billion per year, out of which only 1/3rd goes to life science, is a very low figure Europe-wise. Compare to NIH's 47 billion... Of course there's a lot of country-specific funding, but I would love to see European funding for biomedical research match that in US.

The yearly ERC budget for life science is just about the amount of money to produce a couple of good movies and TV shows. Ok, it is maybe not a fair comparison, but a collective reflection on our priorities is definetely needed!

Increased applications from UK and Switzerland are potential reasons. Switzerland was just allowed back into the program but it shouldn't by itself cause such a big increase.

Same trend for synergy. Crazy amount of work with these dropping funding rates. A submit B1 and then invite successful B1 to submit B2 would make the workload more reasonable.
