When we set out to do this analysis, we hoped to build on an existing methodology to study severe complications in early pregnancy — but there wasn't one. So, in consultation with dozens of experts, @sophiechou.bsky.social, Lizzie Presser and I developed our own. Here's how we did it:
Would love for someone to look at the pre-Roe data. A big reason for the overcapacity of hospitals was that they no longer needed the wards that treated abortion complications. I've seen a talk where a doctor from then talks about that ward getting turned into a storage space.
When an expectant mother died of sepsis in Ireland in 2012, having been denied an abortion, the people of Ireland were so shocked that something like that could happen, that they voted to remove the abortion ban from the Irish constitution.
Thank you for posting this. There are many insidious effects of abortion bans that cast a wide oppressing net. Pretty soon they will argue for no prenatal testing.
