I read a lot of Nancy and I don't really think it has that message. Not even in this strip. This one is just a joke that Nancy doesn't like to read or do schoolwork, but likes to have money.
You're missing Luci's point. Sure, the joke isn't very deep, but the scene is an example of how kids are indoctrinated into capitalism. It's both things, regardless of EB's intent or lack of intent
That is true, it is a product of its time. But pretty much the same joke could be made in a strip today, except the "book" pun wouldn't land so well. "Joke about money implies capitalistic indoctrination" isn't much of an observation, bc yeah obv anyone in such a society will see the value of money.

Anybody else notice this underlying theme in Nancy comics? Bushmiller wasn't even aware he was doing it, but it's pretty obvious once you notice it.
Also, I'm quite certain the school teacher has a mid Atlantic accent.
