Same thing happened to Penn St when Kerry Collin’s was their QB: ranked #2 they had to play in the Rose Bowl leaving #1 Nebraska to face (and dominate ) #3 Miami in their bowl game.

I don’t know why the Natty was not split that year. Might’ve been Nebraska bias.
