That's why most municipalities in California allow senior citizens to opt out of parcel school taxes! Why should seniors have to pay for children!

My very liberal moms had their only non liberal freak out about the property taxes they have to pay on the house that they own free and clear that they bought for $250k that is now valued at $2 million.

I tried to gently probe/admonish but it didn’t really work.

In Texas, they at least pay property tax on the full value more or less*. Though that valuation can be weirdly volatile so maybe they felt the increase disproportionately hit in one year

*Homesteads are capped at 10%/yr increase in assessed value
