Yes exactly. The hashtags help you find your people and topics. I use feeds and custom feeds to only see what I want when I want.

Here’s a link on how to create a list for a particular hashtag. Some people will only read from a particular list when they want a happy feed & want no more news. Me I hit the #cat feed. But you can do people too. The first page on blsky with 3 /// at top.

@knittymag.bsky.social has a how to for knit themed feeds pinned to her page. It’s really easy once you know how and you can apply it to things like books ( #booksky) or sny other interests.

Still new to stuff myself. The hashtag goes in front of a category you might want people to notice. Like #knitting then you space it and you can put it #knit or 🧶 emoji. Just spacing highlights it. Some people create lists of just #knitting or I have lists for #cats or #caturday

One thing not pointed out yet is you can click on the link created by a hashtag like #knitting and then scroll posts of anyone who used that tag. You can then look through the posts by "top" or "latest" posts.

if you want your stuff to get to the knitting feed just put the yarn 🧶 emoji anywhere in your post. use the 🧦 if you want it in the sock knitting feed.

Think about it like a keyword when looking things up in the library catalog. A lot of feeds (subject matter groups) cue off of hashtags as well as general words, but hashtags are most effective. Some people sprinkle them inside the sentence, most put them at the end.

Doesn't matter where in the post as long as it is there. Also hashtags do use up your character count still on this site. So be somewhat selective. for instance your post was captured by my feed Crafters of Bluesky because included it in my tag filter. 1/2

If you choose to make your own feeds you'll have to decide what tags, or maybe a list of users you want to see in the feed. Just to get you started I would use the discover feed and search on the feeds page for some of your interests and add those feeds to try. 2/2
