I'm no expert, but I believe Rodo had very limited room to work with, given existing player contracts. It some took time to fix big mistakes (see: Rigoni auto-trigger clause) and lay the groundwork for what we're seeing now.

Back in one of Rodo's first press conferences, he said a rebuild of the team may take 2-3 transfer windows, maybe more. The expectation was set early that we'd have to be patient.

I believe this all has to do with Rodo. Precourt and his investors have confidence in Rodo to build a winning team and will pay whatever it takes to get the squad

AustinFC has been wildly successful and marketable business wise, despite only logging 1 decent year out of 4.

They currently still have a very passionate fan base that turns up always, but that does not last forever if you don't invest in the club and start winning.

And once that momentum goes, it will be much harder to get it back, than to improve now while you still have everyone's support and attention.

I believe it was a recent interview on Moontower (with WeAreAustinTV I think), where they drew that same comparison to Houston losing their fan base.

I share the thoughts of others who have commented, but would just add... I'm not sure why the All Star Game would matter much at all. Maybe I'm missing something though.

Just thought it might be a random factor. High profile game in Austin might prompt additional spending to increase the fan base by going into the game with some high profile players and strong season. Maybe increase jersey sales etc.
