Has anyone that doesn't have bio family info done DNA tests like ancestry and found them helpful? I think I'm ready to start exploring that part ofy identity and was planning on going with 23 & Me until recently. Now I don't know what the top ones are for these situations - ThreadSky

Ancestry has a bigger database, and is what my dad used to back up his family tree with the Metis Nation when he applied for his status card. He had some of the ancestry info but needed to fill some gaps, and the test helped with the side he isn't in contact with.

If you're wanting to do the testing to look for possible health risks and such, then 23 & Me is the better route. It's actually FDA approved for that, which is awesome.

Both are helpful, just depends on what info you're looking for.

Unfortunately 23&Me shut down after a big data breach recently. 😭 I'm just looking to try and know my ethnic and racial identity better to help with identity exploration. The only thing I know about myself was that I was born Hindu and what city in India I was born in

I hadn't heard about that! Yikes!

Ancestry would likely help you find out more about those things, and possibly connect you with bio relatives if that's something you'd be interested in. Their database is pretty massive

That's the service I've been leaning forward. I wish the genetics department at the hospital that I was working with a few years ago hadn't dropped the ball on me. I would have preferred to go the health information protected route 100% and get all the health data I want
