The shelter called her Esmeralda, for those fascinating celadon-green eyes. I called her Lynx, for her black-tipped ears. She went home with me that day, demanded belly rubs, and slept spooned with me that night and almost every night afterwards.

We had almost 10 years. Not enough.

She’d had a hard life as a street cat; most of her teeth were broken. But she was so fiercely loving. She didn’t care much about food, all she wanted was affection. She’d sleep on or beside me any chance she could get. If I stayed up too late, she’d nip my arm at bedtime, then lead me back to bed.

In March 2017, for Aubrey’s first visit, I made up a guest bed on the sofa in the living room. Lynx went to bed as usual with me, but at dawn Aubrey woke with a cat crouched on her hip. As soon as her eyes opened, Lynx stole her pillow.

She’s loved Aubrey’s pillow best ever since.

Usually she’d fall asleep spooned with me, with my arm bracing her legs and belly. But in the morning after I got up and fed her breakfast, she’d eat just a few bites and then come back to join Aubrey in a bed-burrito.

Aside from snuggles, Lynx loved sunshine, soft textiles, and our balcony garden. She’d get sun-drunk & race around the living room, or go so boneless & sleepy that she felt like liquid when I picked her up. She loved to nap in the shade between our tomato planters on the sun-warmed pavers.

She could be feisty! I have scars from play-bites turned predatory, or from claw-scratches when she wanted to get away *right now.* She HATED oral medications & claw trimming. When she wanted attention she’d put her tail under your foot, then get offended so you had to apologize & comfort her.

What an amazing tribute. I love that you also use the term "cat of my heart," but I am also sad because I know those hurt more at the end. I am glad you had time together. I'm glad Lynx found and claimed you. She could not have had a better person or home. So much sympathy with your grief.
