That’s a great conversation in the comments too. I especially appreciate the attempt to distinguish “cozy versus “domestic” via a difference in tone (cheerfulness level? Seriousness or depth in handling subject matter?)

Recently read CM Waggoner’s “Village Library Demon-Hunting Society” which was a fascinating treatment of the cozy fantasy/mystery genres: played straight at first, then undermined—or at least thoughtfully examined—but ultimately still following those genre expectations.
I've had a couple of things by CM Wagoner on my TBR for a while (I've been struggling to engage with new fiction) but I hadn't heard of that one! It looks fun!
It’s basically “what if someone finally noticed the improbably high murder rate in MURDER SHE WROTE & asked why” and it does fit in every single cozy trapping, while still sometimes allowing characters to recognize the horror of the real deaths precipitating their fun investigations.
