Roughly: the 4E Warlord was a pure martial (i.e. non spellcaster) class that basically served as a party healer (you restored HP by being inspiring and going "it's just a scratch") that also had a very strong sideline in granting other party members bonus actions, like letting them attack for you

The important thing here is the Warlord was a full-fledged no-fooling party healer. You did not need to bring a Cleric to have a healer, you could just bring a Warlord and it served the same purpose, albeit with a different overall bent (less divine magic support, more action facilitation/bonuses)

4E D&D had a number of classes for each role. Clerics still existed and were slanted towards extra healing. Bards had a lot of movement-based stuff, shuffling people around, etc. But Warlords didn't dip beneath the minimum floor of acceptable healing, and had a distinct gameplay identity as well

The idea is that they’re a leader who heals and supports their allies without the use of magic—basically “push through the pain” or by directing their allies to exploit an enemy’s weakness

It was controversial because the bad faith interpretation is that the warlord was “yelling your wounds shut”
