i personally don't get why nvidia felt the need to ditch the good old 8pin pcie power connectors, like yeah, 4 cables for a high end gpu isn't great, but they have a better safety margin, and aren't known for failing spectacularly

The user error thing is definitely false since that's two different OEM's (Per Google, the Corssir is Seasonic, and unsure of Asus). Nvidia needs to start over with that connector, or just put in a C13 connector.

The ASUS Astral cards apparently come with per-pin current sensing for the 12V lines so they can measure and alert if the load is unbalanced. I'm convinced that should become default with this connector if the card goes anywhere near the spec.

Putting the GPU into a low-power safe mode would probably be enough, tbh. Leaves the user with a PC that's at least usable for 2D work and the driver can warn them that somethings's off about their GPU power connector.

I think it’s obvious that no one thought the 12VHPWR connector through.

The solution is simple - in the new standard they should have upped the voltage. 24V or even 48V feeding the GPU. Thats what engineers do when current draw starts going plaid in industrial settings, you up the voltage.
