Used the app twice in a year. Both times I had to sign in again. The second time I had to create a new account because they had changed login system/url. When I tried logging the third and final time before I removed the app. Their system would not accept the password my iPhone had saved.

This is such a shame, I bought the 5 series Bosch dishwasher a few years ago and love it. No app, no wifi, physical buttons, 7 segment display. The way appliances should be.

Feels like a kick in the teeth to us evangelizing this model

My fridge can optionally connect to wifi so it can (drum roll) ... *email* you if the door is left open too long.

If I keep this device after my next move, I'm going to see if I can rip out the wifi or wrap it in tin foil.

My fridge wouldn't let me permanently disable the WiFi so I opened it up and unplugged the WiFi card manually. Not trying to have it broadcasting or connected to my WiFi doing absolutely zilch.

I completely agree. Adding to what you have said: We have a model with a display. So we can start all(?) programs incl rinse locally on the machine. But despite having a display with fancy symbols for wash cycle, dry cycle, WiFi connection etc. the machine does not display the remaining run time.

The information is available in the app. But I don't want to have to grab my phone and open an app when I stand in front of the machine. After all I have to load and unload it manually, anyway. The app doesn't do that for me.

Being connected to the internet allowed a firmware upgrade which improved the UI. So this allows them to ship an unfinished (at least on the software side) product.

fwiw hcpy didn't require 100% reverse engineering. local control in home connect is a feature of the platform, it's just poorly implemented (particularly the need to connect to the net to provision it) and poorly documented. but it is implemented and there is doco. it could definitely be better tho

Strong agree. As a dishwasher I love my Bosch (it washes dishes very well and energy efficiently), but features being locked behind cloud services sucks. (It is nice getting a notification on the other side of the house when it's done, though; happy to have that through HA but still could be local)

WiFi/Cloud should be a value add, not a requirement. Putting any privacy issues aside, internet isn't 100% reliable what if there is a network issue when you just want to run a rinse cycle?

I've been using my Whirlpool dishwasher for 13 years (it was installed by a previous owner of my house) and is from 2002.

23 years old and It still works perfectly. I even found a full schematic for it tucked away behind the kick panel!

I also cannot push enough how awful smart appliances are to own in places like the gulf coast where every time there is a storm, tropical or just a regular front, the power might go haywire and you roll the dice on whether the fancy ARM chip they put in to control it got fried or not.

We’re going to have to jailbreak our appliances just to add basic features back, like hold down a button combo for 5 seconds to enable rinse mode. Something they could’ve easily done in the first place.

Exactly; that's why I popped open the manual. I know on a lotta devices they take away buttons but let you use button combos to get at all the settings.

If you go through with the localized control please do a video/blog post about it, I just got a similar bosh dishwasher and I've been contemplating the same thing but I think it's a bit beyond me without some kind of tutorial
