At some point we have to accept that the old "it's the economy, stupid" truism no longer applies - if it ever did.

anyone who has as simple asnwer to a complex problem is almost always wrong
If all you look at is the aggregates you get extremely biased results.
Economy has to be looked at spatially. If you do that the election maps are pretty congruent.
The wing choices but they match.
There is a much better chance for depressed communities to get help from Dems but GOP has convinced them that DEMS, cities, and minorities are to blame.
And it's also true that people in all circumstances now have more high-resolution visibility into the material circumstances of the rich than ever before. The visibility might have started with Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, which just happened to coincide with Reagan.
